RE: 2 Studs or 3 Studs? ... That Is the Question!

I had a popup a few years back with 2 stud happy jacks. Seems to me one of the rears is always more lightly loaded than the others. Put it there.

RE: A good night's sleep

Thanks I'll check out those sites. And Joe, yes I always thought Pt R was expensive until I moved to Co. Housing is indeed cheap compared; but not the food or medical care!

RE: Mexico and Drugs!

Interesting and entertaining book can't vouch for the accuracy:
"Into the Lawless Heart of the Sierra Madre - God's Middle Finger" by Richard Grant. Would be curious to hear other's responses.

RE: Poll-First Hand RVing Crimes In Mexico

Good idea; could use a few more categories; i.e. eyewitness to a crime
etc.
I spent over 5 months & drove 7K miles last year. My first extended trip in Mexico. I managed to be in a couple of dicey situations (in addition to the usual shake downs by the trafficos in Toluca and Acapulco ). A holdup try on the road between Lake Chapala (just outside the town of Vulcanos sp?) and PV where a local drove up and warned us and got us on our way just as 5 men on horseback appeared out of the arroyo next to where we were stopped for a rest. Heard about 2 assaults and robberys from friends one with a knife(first hand accounts) and a second hand account of a highway robbery on the road near Morelia. I foiled an attempted pickpocket by a well dressed guy with a red baseball hat in the main market in Patzcurao. My truck was rammed by a drunk while sleeping at a Pemex and we witnessed a carjacking near CJ while crossing the border in April.
My wife and I had a fantastic trip overall. But the though of returning to Norther Mexico gives us pause. Definitely felt more secure and comfortable in the South. Too bad the North comes first.
Certainly not what I'd expect traveling in the US. Although our cities probably have an equal share of crime - Oakland Ca. for instance. Will I travel Mexico again - yes and will visit the Bahia this Winter.
A recent book worth reading for Mexico travelers in "God's Middle Finger" by Richard Grant. Can't vouch for the accuracy of reporting but a great read. And will give a real understanding of the drug trade and culture of the North.

RE: controlling the roll

Timbrens or Ranchos should work. Had a Lance 1030, never had a problem with roll even with only 55lbs in the rear. (02 dodge drw) But I do have the camper pkg.

RE: Air Conditioner

Have you tried the AC at its lowest setting and turned "on" before you start the gen? I could run the unit I had on my last Lance this way. I don't remember the size but I expect it was a 13000 BTU model.

Air Conditioner

I'm prewired for one and would want to be able to run it with my Honda 2000 if need be. There is a "high efficiency Brisk Air" at Camping World. Is the installation pretty straight forward?

RE: Changing DRW to SRWs

Talked to fred goeske at wheel adaptors.com. He suggested saving the money for custom wheels and get a ford 350 16" wheel with spacers to put the track in the center of the duallies with a 12 ply tire.
Next step is to weigh my bigfoot. I was figuring on a max weight of 7000lbs fully loaded. But I want a fail safe system.

RE: Changing DRW to SRWs

Talked to Stockton - they are quick. $305 for a rim set in the center of the duallies

RE: Changing DRW to SRWs

On my dodge the front and back rims are interchangeable. The inner rim tracks the fronts and a stock 2500 SRW I believe uses the same rims as a DRW. So it seems like the torque on the bearings should be the same as a stock 2500 (using only 1 wheel on the rear of my DRW).
But I like the idea of mounting the wheel with the flair outwards for better stability with a camper. That should just reverse the torque,or will it somehow increase the torque?

RE: Changing DRW to SRWs

I have a few reasons for wanting to convert,2 of them for Mexico travel where duals double the tolls and the difficulty of getting through towns without being stopped and fined and the last to improved mileage.
SO looks like maybe try a trade. But I've only 75K; hard to find a low mileage truck but will look.
And yes a single e tire is too close to max for my comfort so even with a trade it would mean new rims and tires. The present rims are interchangeable front and rear and the inner tire tracks the front. I wonder what would happen if I just bolted the rear rim facing outwards
give me a nice wide track for stability but would that over torque the axle and bearings?

Changing DRW to SRWs

Would like to change over to 19.5 SRW. Seems like I should be able to "just" remove the stock wheels (and maybe get a new box but at least remove the outriggers) and replace with Visions or Ricksons. Or is that too simple and there is some trick to it I'm not aware of?

Don't forget the low price of fuel is offset by the high price of tolls! You pay one way or the other.

RE: Generator or Solar.....or Both????

I have a 55 amp converter from Best and 2 6v T105s. What's the best (quickest) charging hook-up? Directly to the Honda 2000; through the campers converter, through my Battery Minder or something else I haven't spent money on yet - like an inverter?

RE: Close Call

The "plate" (about 10"x4"?) that the jack bolts to is what twisted. I was not a little flabergasted because it straightened out almost to its original flatness from a twist that left the jack at at least 20 degrees angle. I think what happened was the jack control is shorting and when I press the front buttons sometimes the back corner operates also. In this case raising the oposite corner which I didn't notice.
But still!! I also had the brackets swung in as per the Bigfoot instructions - next time I wont do that!
I can see the need for springyness in the bracket - it allows the jack to adjust slightly to different pitches as the camper is raised and lowered without flexing the fiberglass. But sure makes for a wobbly experience.
The last Lance I had a 1030, was solid never needed support off the truck. I'm wondering if there is another brand swingout braacket for the bigfoot?
